Performing Arts

Our music and drama teachers celebrate the creativity and talents of every student.

From the youngest children to the eldest, all students are given opportunities to explore a variety of theatrical genres and, through their own participation, learn to understand the power and beauty of the performing arts.  The goal of our program is to encourage children to respect their own talent and gain confidence in their ability to shine, on stage and off.

On Stage
Stanwich students are as at home on the stage as they are in the classroom or on the field.  Even the most reserved of children find success and self-confidence in front of an audience during their years here.  In the early grades, both the actors and the scripts are small, but the standing ovations are thunderous.  As the performers grow and progress, the productions become more sophisticated, the staging more professional and the singing, dancing and acting talents more remarkable.  In the middle grades, students shine on the stage in musical productions such as Annie, Aladdin and Oliver. By the time they get to Upper School, students are performing demanding musicals such as West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, The Wiz and Inherit the Wind.  And the audiences are always on their feet, calling for more.

Making Music
Music benefits all students by giving them the creative joy in the development of their innate gifts. Our uniquely qualified performing arts team offers a vibrant program made available to every Stanwich student from kindergarten through Grade 12. A solid foundation of musical concepts is promoted at each grade level with emphasis on musicianship, creative thinking, and self-expression. Students apply concepts and develop musical skills upon which artistic performances are created. Our music staff collaborate to design instruction ensuring that all students are able to experience music in its many facets.

In grades 1 through 3, students have the opportunity, during the school day, to study a stringed instrument and participate in a performing ensemble, while older students build on their skills and can play in a string orchestra, symphonic band, or wind ensemble. Students in the Upper School also perform with the Spartan Express Jazz Ensemble, working on their jazz, funk, rock and pop repertoire from different time periods.
