Commonly Asked Questions

Where do I buy uniforms?

You can access Mills Wear here or directly at www.millswear.com.  The Stanwich code is 257.

Where do I get a copy of the Student Handbook?

The handbook can be found here. The handbook is updated each August.

Where can I find the academic year calendar?

The yearly calendar can be found on the website here.

What are the school day hours?

The arrival and dismissal hours can be found here.

How do I find out what teacher my child has and who is in my class?

In late August or early September, a note from your child’s teacher will be mailed to your home along with a class list.

How do I contact my child's teacher?

There are no telephones in the classrooms. However, teachers have opportunities during the school day to return phone calls. If you need to contact your child's teacher, a list of all employees can be found by clicking here. Teachers will respond to email within 24 hours. You may also leave a message for a teacher at the division office.

How do I arrange for my child to ride the school bus?

Every child who resides in the Town of Greenwich is eligible to ride the bus. In August, bus routes are posted on the school website.  For information about busing for children who reside outside the Town of Greenwich, please contact the school office.

What happens if my child arrives late to school?

Your child should proceed directly to the school office and check in.

What if my child forgets his/her lunch or other belongings?

We always have appropriate food on hand; no student will go hungry. As long as this is not a regular occurrence, lunch may be delivered to the office. Please do not bring lunch to your child's classroom. Likewise, please deliver any "forgotten" items to the office, not the classroom.

What if my child becomes ill during the school day?

School offices are equipped with thermometers and a couch for students to rest on. Unless a child has a temperature, we encourage him/her to lie down for a few minutes, have a drink of water and return to class. The school nurse will call home when a child is obviously sick or has a temperature.

Will children go outside for recess and gym if the weather is cold?

It is our policy to take children outdoors whenever possible, even in cold weather. Always send your child to school with warm outerwear.

How do I get involved at Stanwich?

There are many opportunities for involvement for parents at Stanwich. At the beginning of every school year, the Stanwich School Parent Association hosts welcome coffees to introduce the new Parent Board and provide information about Parent Association committees. There are sign-up sheets for those interested in joining committees. In addition, as the school year progresses, there are ample opportunities to participate as a volunteer. The weekly e-newsletter issues regular calls for volunteers for all committees. From assisting in the library to teaching art appreciation, from supervising community service activities to running a book fair, there are many ways to get involved. Stanwich parents are an integral part of the life of the school. Speak to your grade-level representative, stay tuned to this website, and attend parent meetings. You'll find a way to get involved that's right for you!

How do I arrange play dates for my child?

At the beginning of the school year, you will receive a class list with telephone numbers and addresses. You will meet fellow parents at the many school functions early in the year. If you are a family new to Stanwich, you will be assigned a "buddy" family with a child in your child's grade. Your buddy family will help you become acquainted with the School and the other students in your child's grade.

What does the school expect me to contribute financially?

Each year, the school strives to reach 100% participation in the Annual Fund from all members of the Stanwich communityPlease see the "Support Stanwich" section of this website.

How can I become a member of the Parent Association Board of Directors?

Start volunteering for any of the various Parent Board committees and find an area that you like. Become involved and meet other parents. In January of each year, an open call for nominations to the Parent Board is held. Self-nominations are encouraged. The Parent Board is open to all parents and fresh faces are welcomed. Enthusiasm and a willingness to serve are prized!

Food Service

Students eat lunch at school Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, students are dismissed before lunch. Students either bring lunch from home, or participate in the purchased lunch programs, which are described below. The school supplies a nutritious mid-morning snack to all students every day.

The Stanwich School offers a purchased lunch program for all students by two food services: CT Catering, and Corbo's Corner Deli. Parents may choose either of the services for their child(ren), as often or infrequently as desired.

Corbo's cannot guarantee nut-free food. Therefore, the school does not recommend this programs for students with food allergies, sensitivities or dietary restrictions.

All payments must be made directly to the vendors and all inquiries should be made directly to them.

NOTE: The Stanwich School strives to maintain a NUT-FREE environment. We have a number of students with serious allergies to nuts, so it is vital that parents and students NOT bring or send any food to school containing nuts. This includes peanut butter sandwiches. Please make sure there are no nuts present before sending food to school in a lunchbox or for a birthday treat or classroom event. Everyone's cooperation is appreciated.

Snow Days and Emergency Closings

For snow days or any other emergency closings, we follow the Greenwich Public Schools. There is also a phone “blast,” email and text notification system for parents, alerting them of closings, delays or changes to our normal schedule. Please note, your contact information must be up-to-date in the MyBackpack system for you to receive the alerts. In order to receive the text message:

  • your cell phone must be included in the Residential Address section of your profile,
  • you must “OPT IN” to that service.

To do this, please text the word YES to 67587.  Once the process is completed successfully, parents will receive a confirmation from SchoolMessenger confirming registration.

If Greenwich Public Schools are not in session, we are still in communication with Town of Greenwich transportation and safety officials. We would ask you not to call the school office unless absolutely necessary.

For school closings, delays or early dismissal, you can also check the Stanwich School website.
