About Stanwich

Junior House

An essential part of the school's mission is to "promote awareness of and service to others." Instilling a commitment to volunteerism among the students and parents is an integral part of Stanwich's educational goals. Since its inception, the school has proactively reached out to and established meaningful relationships with numerous organizations in Greenwich, Stamford, New York City and other neighboring communities. The school has also participated in national and even international service programs.

The purpose of Stanwich's community service program is not just to engage students and families in acts of kindness and generosity, but to expand their awareness of the needs of others and demonstrate through action that their contributions are meaningful.

In the Junior House, community service assumes a new level of importance. Students are divided into teams. Under the supervision of a faculty member and at least one parent, each team volunteers on-site at a particular community organization on a monthly basis throughout the school year. Current community organizations supported by Stanwich include Greenwich Green & Clean, Greenwich Audubon Society, Stamford Nature Center, Stamford Food Bank, St. Luke’s LifeWorks, Waterside School, Greenwich Senior Center, and Kids in Crisis. These regular on-site visits give students tangible experience working to better themselves and others.

Also, all Junior House students are required to prepare and serve lunch at a local shelter during the year. Lunch is prepared by students at the home of Headmistress Patricia Young. Information about additional volunteer opportunities is distributed to students and their families; participation in these programs is encouraged and supported.
