About Stanwich

Students in kindergarten through Grade 3 enjoy a varied and dynamic physical education program. For these younger students, the program emphasizes the acquisition of skills and the building of strength, balance, coordination and endurance. In addition, the program is designed to give Primary House students a sense of fun and to promote positive social interaction among students.
Students in kindergarten and grade 1 enjoy two physical education classes each week. Students in Grades 2 and 3 enjoy three physical education classes each week. Each class lasts for forty minutes. All Primary House students also enjoy recess daily.

Sports and skills emphasized during the year are as follows:

Kindergarten

Playground games, tumbling, coordination drills, body awareness and management games, basic soccer, hand-eye development games, throwing and catching, track and field.

Grade 1

Playgound games, body awareness and management games, introduction to rhythmic games, coordination drills, basic soccer, throwing and catching, track and field.

Grade 2

Playground games, body awareness and management games, coordination drills and fitness training, introduction to basic sports (throwing, catching, hitting, receiving, passing and running), soccer, football, basketball, baseball, rhythmic games, indoor circuit training, track and field.

Grade 3

Soccer, team handball, football, basketball, swimming, circuit training, swimming, baseball, softball, lacrosse, track and field.

Boys and girls are taught together in the Primary House, although they are separated into small groups when appropriate.

Each student from kindergarten through grade 3 is assessed in his or her physical, emotional and social development in a written report. Grade 3 students are assessed in each individual activity.
