


Stanwich Plays Historic First JV Boys' Basketball GameDate Posted: 12/15/11, Story by Chantal Benevidez
Stanwich played its first-ever JV basketball game this week, marking an important milestone in the history of the school. In an up and down game, the JV boys' team inagurated high-level athletics New Canaan. After a rousing start that saw Stanwich take a 15-5 lead. RJ Mullins dominated with 3 assists and 4 points in the first ten minutes, and he finished the game with 11 points. Timmy Agro added 6 points and dished 3 assists, including one beauty to Sam Hoffman, who totaled 6 points. Stanwich ran hard throughout the game, flying up and down the court. "The Stanwich team came and really ran the floor on us," said New Canaan Coach David Simor. "It was a good game." Noah Hoffman and Peter Agro also scored key buckets in the second half, along with Jose Maita and Andrew Bologna. The effort was noticed by fans, including the many who showed up to support Stanwich. "The kids hustled and had good shot selections," commented Mr. Murphy. "The team put on a good show." Gregg Febbraio, Randy Maldonado and John Lombardo played tough defense with James Murphy and David Rivera who scooped up important rebounds. Coach Suro and Coach Katona are proud of the immense effort of their team. "A spectacular start to our JV history," said Coach Suro. "It holds a lot of promise for our future." Stanwich plays its first home game of the season against Greenwich Country Day on January 11, 2012.
In their final game of the season, the Stanwich football team again showed heart and resiliency in a comeback that fell just short by losing 14-12 to Fairfield Country Day. Quarterback Connor Langan, who had scored earlier in the game on a long run, led a final drive which brought the trailing Cougars within 2 points on a rainbow pass to Elijah Tateishi. While the 2-point conversion fell short, the Stanwich players closed the gap against Fairfield Country Day bringng them within inches of another tieing the game.
In other highlights from the game, Ian Peeler made a second half interception off a tipped pass by Matt Smith which ended FCDS's momentum in the second half. Lukens Boolbol also knocked down a pass earlier in the drive, and Chance Noonan nearly picked off a deep pass playing free safety. Hard running by John Esposito kept drives alive for the Cougars who walked off the field with their heads held high and as a much improved team from early in the season. The commitment of the team to each other, their coaches and to be noble and gracious competitors was evident through their close losses, big wins and major comebacks this season. The team expressed gratituge and a sense of great accomplishment after the game.
