The
Stanwich School Junior House provides students
with opportunities for learning and leadership
as they enter their adolescent years.
All areas of this program are based on the mission
of The School.
The
Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule serve as
our moral compass. Ethics classes as well
as commitment to community service instill these
values both in class and in daily life.
There
are many opportunities to develop leadership
roles in all of the student activities: student
government, community service, academic classes,
clubs, athletic teams, drama, and music.
Students are encouraged to participate in and
give of themselves fully. The entire community
including teachers, administrators, and parents
guide and support the students in the development
of their individual talents.
The
Junior House English curriculum explores classical
and contemporary literature, which serves as
inspiration for the development of personal
writing styles. Emphasis on grammar and
vocabulary through the study of Greek and Latin
roots instills a strong foundation and understanding
of the English language.
Mathematics
continues to focus on problem-solving with hands-on
investigation probing to greater depths.
Most students study Algebra in Grade 8, however,
for a select few, it begins in Grade 7.
Algebra is the foundation for subsequent math
classes.
The
Science curriculum emphasizes process learning
through activities and lessons and the resulting
reports. Skills developed during the course
enhance problem-solving abilities.
Students
focus on American History over the course of
a two-year study. This in-depth examination
of our American civilization enables our students
to better understand World Cultures, which follows
in Grade 9.
French
and Spanish provide greater depth into the oral
language as well as a serious emphasis on the
written language. A new addition, Latin,
begins with a traditional approach that emphasizes
grammar.
Music
is performance oriented, with an opportunity
to participate in either chorus or band.
The study of music theory and the history of
music is offered in grade 9. In Art, students
express themselves through experiencing a variety
of media and creative technological approaches.
Drama becomes an elective in the Junior House.
Oration and debate skills continue to be developed
in weekly classes and students are expected
to speak in a variety of forums.
Our
Junior House students select a sport each season
to develop their skills and improve personal
fitness. School teams compete in the Fairchester
League. In addition to the interscholastic
teams, students are encouraged to cultivate
their skills in life sports they can enjoy throughout
their lives.
