The
Stanwich School Intermediate House gives our
children the opportunity to develop the skills
and personal character set forth in the mission
of the school. A traditional curriculum
that has proven its merits over the years, a
daily structure that addresses the needs of
our students and an environment that encourages
the behaviors we value insure each child's success.
The faculty, with their understanding of and
enthusiasm for children at this age level, help
each student reach his or her full potential.
A
comprehensive program in English helps our students
develop effective communication skills.
Our study includes an emphasis on vocabulary,
including the study of Greek and Latin roots,
an understanding of the elements of writing
through grammar exercises, and a structured
approach to writing. In addition, the
study of classical literature introduces our
students to exemplary writing styles.
In
Mathematics, the main focus is for students
to demonstrate their mastery of skills and apply
them accurately when solving a variety of problems.
Students learn to manipulate spreadsheets, create
graphs, and complete hands-on projects, which
support and broaden their understanding of mathmatical
concepts.
The
Science curriculum combines technology, hands-on
experimentation, and traditional classroom instruction.
This combination of approaches insures that
students understand science concepts thoroughly,
not only in the abstract, but in practical application,
as well.
In
History, studying American history, ancient
civilizations, and medieval history helps students
understand how our community has evolved.
By analyzing history, students begin to develop
skills needed to solve problems in their own
communities.
Beginning
in Grade 4, the formal study of French is also
taught, which is an opportunity to introduce
reading and writing in a foreign language.
Students in Grade 5 have an opportunity to choose
French or Spanish where they learn the written
and spoken language as well as its culture and
customs. This study continues in Grade
6.
Learning
to play an instrument or participating in a
chorus helps students appreciate the pleasure
of joining with others to play and sing in the
music program. In studio arts classes,
students learn to sculpt in clay, construct
with wood, paint with acrylics and watercolors,
and create designs and cartoon animations with
technology. In drama, students learn all
aspects of theater by producing, managing and
acting out each facet of the production.
Sportsmanship,
healthy living and individual and team play
are stressed in the physical education program.
Learning to be responsible team players while
developing individual skills gives students
the foundation necessary for successful team
play. With the introduction of life sports,
students gain athletic skills that serve them
well beyond the time of interscholastic competition.
The
Bible guides the direction of our values classes
as we instill the values of the Ten Commandments
and the Golden Rule in weekly classes.
In addition, these values are reinforced during
morning assemblies where students gather as
a community. Emphasis is on the book of
Proverbs which provide excellent instruction
for daily living.
