Students paint cityscapes that include a skyline and a streetscape, and also create collages in the style of Romare Bearden.
A stand-out project is the Grade 4 exhibit of 3D guitar sculptures. The creative process begins with thumbnail sketches and moves into a full-scale drawn plan. Next, students build their guitars out of cardboard and wood and use acrylic paint and add details using a variety of materials. Every guitar requires a great deal of work and displays an amazing amount of imagination and personal expression.
Students paint self-portraits in the style of Chuck Close called Photorealism or Superrealism. In this style, artists in the early 1970s created a link between representational systems of painting and photography.
Students learn about value and composition drawing skulls, shells and gargoyles.
“African Masks” are sculpted out of soap, while later in the year, students create cupcakes in the style of Wayne Thiebaud.
