About Stanwich

Library

The library is a place Stanwich students go to borrow books, learn library skills, obtain access to information from a variety of sources, perform research, hear read-aloud stories, talk with the librarian about books, work independently, or just enjoy a quiet place to read. It is the intellectual heart of The School and a hub of activity and learning.

The library currently houses a collection of more than 10,000 books in print form. The library maintains subscriptions to numerous periodicals for student and faculty use and provides access to a wide range of print and non-print resources for research and study. The collection is expanding exponentially each year to meet the demands of the growing student population and the expanding curriculum. The library is fully automated with the Follett system; all transactions are handled electronically.

Primary House students (K-3) visit the library for two formal sessions each week, once for "book exchange" to select and check out a book of their choice and once for a library lesson. During the library lesson periods, students are taught library skills and literature appreciation.

Intermediate House students (4-6) and Junior House students (7-9) visit the library throughout the day, and especially during their study hall periods to both borrow books and use information technology resources.

In addition to running the library, the library staff coordinates many special events throughout the school year including an annual month-long focus on reading each January, author visits, reading incentive programs, book groups and newsletters. Each summer, the library staff distributes lists of suggested titles for summer reading. The library staff is actively engaged with the faculty and students; they consult and collaborate with all members of The School community to enhance the curriculum with literary and technological resources.
