Intermediate House Projects

All Intermediate House students participate in a weekly "Projects" period. Designed specifically for students in grades 4-6, the "Projects" period teaches students how to work cooperatively in a group of their peers.

Intermediate House students are assigned to a team of students taken from all three grades (4, 5, and 6). The team works together all year. Guided by a faculty facilitator, each team collaborates on tasks that require group interaction including listening, sharing ideas, developing common objectives and teamwork. When the task is complete, each team presents its finished product and discusses the collaborative process.

The tasks are drawn from across the curriculum, from values to science. For example, Projects teams have been challenged to:
  • construct a bridge out of popsicle sticks and white glue that will support a stack of textbooks
  • from specified materials, build a container for a raw egg that will protect the egg from cracking when it is dropped from a rooftop
  • design a paper airplane that will travel farthest and remain aloft longest
  • define values such as "honesty" and "courage" and depict such values on a poster
  • create a Stanwich School board game that reflects the mission of The School
  • develop an architectural plan for the ideal middle school
