Foreign Language

PRIMARY HOUSE FOREIGN LANGUAGE

In the Primary House, music, drama and movement are taught in French. This unique immersion curriculum is designed to expose young students to a foreign language in a natural, enjoyable setting and prepare them for more formal foreign language instruction in the Intermediate House and beyond.

During music and drama classes, Primary House students learn songs in French and English, including The Stanwich School Song. French songs are often sung during morning assemblies. Likewise, in drama, students in Kindergarten through Grade 3 stage a grade-level musical production in French and English.

INTERMEDIATE HOUSE FOREIGN LANGUAGE

The objective of the Intermediate House foreign language program is to enable each student to gain a basic comprehension of either French or Spanish. Upon completion of Grade 6, students have the ability to understand, speak and write basic French or Spanish. This includes basic facts about French or Spanish culture and geography.

Foreign language classes are taught in small groups to allow for meaningful interaction among students and the teacher, as well as the attainment of high academic goals. In keeping with the precedent established in the Primary House French program, many lessons feature music and drama and rely on skills in the performing arts. In Grades 5 and 6, coursework is supplemented with video and audio materials.

JUNIOR HOUSE FOREIGN LANGUAGE

All Junior House students study a foreign language; they may choose French, Spanish or Latin.

The study of French and Spanish emphasize the ability to communicate using all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Additionally, these courses are designed to teach students cultural awareness, as well as sensitivity towards and appreciation of French or Spanish traditions. Class work is conducted primarily in French or Spanish; the use of English is kept to a minimum.

The study of Latin emphasizes grammar and vocabulary. Translation of classical texts is an important component of the curriculum.
