Field Trips
Stanwich students participate in field trips that are linked to the academic program in each grade level or department. The field trips are intended to enhance the program at each grade level. For example, kindergarten students visit a farm to observe the"new life" each spring. When Grade 1 students study their community and the special roles that individuals play, they take trips to the Post Office and Fire Station. In Grade 2, to conclude a unit on the seashore, students visit Cove Island in Stamford and work with an on-site naturalist to identify different types of sea creatures.
As students' circle of reference grows, they venture farther from the local community. Grade 4 travels for the day to Philadelphia during their study of the Revolutionary War period. They also travel to the Tenement Museum in New York City during their study of immigration. Grade 5 spends an overnight in upstate New York learning about the environment as well as participating in team building activities. Grade 6 students spend two nights in Lake Placid, New York which is linked to their history and science curriculum. Grade 7 students visit Boston; grade 8 students visit Washington, D.C; and Grade 9 students travel to Costa Rica.
All field trips are supervised by Stanwich faculty. Recent field trips have been taken to the Cloisters Museum, The American Museum of Natural History, Greenwich Hospital, The Botanical Gardens, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Liberty Science Center and Lake Placid Olympic Park.
Field trips are also organized to promote School spirit and grade-wide camaraderie. For example, Grade 7 students begin the school year with a day-long white water rafting trip. Additionally, voluntary trips are offered such as supervised ski weekends and mountain climbing.
