About Stanwich

Working At Stanwich

The Stanwich School faculty and staff are an energetic, collegial, hardworking team of educators and administrators, dedicated to the education of the whole child - mind, body and spirit. A spirit of excellence and teamwork infuses all we do. Faculty and staff at The Stanwich School are expected not only to teach, but also to model the values that The School imparts to its students.

Founded in 1998, the Stanwich School currently serves students in grades Pre-K to 8 with plans to expand to Grade 12. Students are grouped in five Houses: Pre-K, Primary House (Grades K-3), Intermediate House (Grades 4-6), Junior House (Grades 7-9) and Senior House (Grades 10-12).

As part of the school's mission to provide a rigorous academic program, two teachers are assigned to each classroom in both the Primary and Intermediate Houses (grades K-6); one head teacher and one intern teacher. A head teacher typically holds a masters degree in education and is an experienced educator. The intern teacher is typically a masters degree candidate. The head teacher acts as a mentor to the intern teacher.

In the Junior House, student schedules are departmentalized and faculty members teach in specialty areas. Intern teachers may be assigned to assist faculty members where appropriate. In addition to teaching, Junior House faculty members serve as student advisors, lead clubs and participate in regular community service projects with students.

Specialists teach physical education, music, drama, art, foreign language and library. All faculty and staff members must be computer literate and are expected to possess word processing skills, knowledge of the Internet and email, and familiarity with ways to integrate computer programs into the curriculum. All students in Grades 7 and above use laptop computers throughout the day.

Working at the Stanwich School provides opportunities for personal and professional growth in a dynamic and growing community. Particular attention is given to orienting new faculty members both in advance of the school year and on an on-going basis. The teaching staff is given ample time to collaborate, plan and learn from one another.
Opportunities include:
  • weekly faculty luncheon meetings
  • daily grade-level faculty meetings
  • monthly House meetings
  • high-quality professional development both within and outside The School
  • a supervision and evaluation process designed to promote excellence and professional growth
  • candid, constructive communication among faculty and between faculty and administration
  • CPR/First Aid training

The Board of Trustees is committed to providing compensation and benefits at a competitive level to attract and retain the most talented faculty. The Stanwich School has one of the highest faculty retention rates of area schools.
