Opening day for the Stanwich JV baseball team proved to be a memorable one for the boys of spring as the team defeated Brunswick 9-3.  David Rivera dominated the game on the mound by pitching six, strong innings.  In the six innings, managed to pick up 12 strikeouts and only allowed 6 hits and two earned runs.  Connor Langan came in to shut the door in the final inning.  Rivera was also led the way offensively for the Cougars collecting three hits in four at bats.  Gregg Febraio (2 hits, 2 runs scored), Pete Agro (2 hits, 1 run scored, 2 RBI) and John Esposito (2 hits) had big days at the plate for the Cougars.  The boys played a great defensive game and were very excited to start the season off with a win. 

On May 1 the Stanwich girls' lacrosse team traveled to Bedford to take on Rippowam-Cisqua. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead on a nice individual effort by Valerie Romo. Rippowam bounced back and scored the next 5 goals of the game. Stanwich picked up a bit of momentum when Emily Moran scored in the final moments of the first half to cut the lead to 5-2. The Cougars continued to play hard to open the second half and had numerous scoring chances. Lucy Burnett, Tess Killen, Caroline Robinson and Elizabeth Robinson had good looks at the goal. After a goal by Rippowam, Arden Orwicz got Stanwich back on the board when she broke through the defense and let off a beautiful shot past the Rippowam goalkeeper. The teams battled back and forth the rest of the way with Emily Moran scoring two more goals for Stanwich. In the end, it was not enough as Stanwich fell by a score of 8-5. Caroline Baird played the whole game in goal for the Cougars and stopped many scoring chances from Rippowam.

The Stanwich School boys' lacrosse team played a thrilling game at Fairfield Country Day on May 2. It was evenly played game in which both teams gave it their all. Stanwich dug itself an early hole as they went quickly down 3-0. However, the Cougars did not give up and dominated the rest of the half to get themselves back in the game. Nick Daetwiler got Stanwich on the board. Chris Flippin scored the next goal for Stanwich on a nice feed from Daetwiler. Daetwiler scored his second goal of the game to knot the score at three. In the closing moments of the 2nd quarter, Alex Dunn put Stanwich ahead when he scored on a pass from Will Meeker. Fairfield answered back with three goals of their own to take a 6-4 lead. Once again, Stanwich battled back on goals from Daetwiler and Locke McGee. Heading into the 4th quarter, the score was all tied up at six. With a little over two minutes left in the game, Fairfield scored to go up 7-6. The never-say-die Cougars did not give up and tied the game on wonderful individual effort by Will Meeker. It looked like the game was going to end in a 7-7 tie, but with 6 seconds left in the game, FCDS was able to squeak one by Stanwich and win the game 8-7. It was a tough loss for the Cougars, as they left everything they had out on the field. Coach Radcliffe was happy with the effort he received from his team. His defensive corp (Charlie Rote, Peter Larkin, Ian Davis and Jack Schoen) were in the faces of the FCDS players all game long. The Stanwich mid-fielders (Chris Flippin, Lawson Mayer, Andrew Smith, Alex Dunn, Jackson Boolbol and Ian Davis) were all over the field. The Stanwich attack (Will Meeker, Nick Daetwiler and Locke McGee) put pressure on the Fairfield defense all game long. Goalkeeper Alex Cohen was his usual outstanding self in goal for the Cougars. Stanwich looks to bounce back when they host Greens Farms on May 3.

The Stanwich School won their first game of the season on the new field at Stanwich Road when they took on King on April 23. The Cougars jumped out early and never looked back in their 8-1 victory.  Coach Radcliffe was pleased with his team's movement of the ball. Stanwich was tremendous on both sides of the ball.  Five different Cougars found the scoring column.  Chipping in with goals were Nick Daetwiler, Locke McGee, Will Meeker, Chris Flippin and Jackson Boolbol.  Nick, Locke and Chris also added assists to go with their goals.  The defense played their best game all season by playing sound positionally and working together as a unit.  Alex Cohen had another remarkable day in net, making 17 saves, with several coming right outside the crease.  The boys look to make it two in a row when they travel to Fairfield Country Day on May 2.

The Stanwich School 7/8 baseball team took on Rippowam-Cisqua on Wednesday, April 18.  It was exciting back and forth game that ended up in a 3-3 tie.  Rippowam was leading 3-1 going into the top of the seventh inning.  Pete Agro led off the inning with a double and Elijah Tateishi followed with a walk.  Agro then stole third and scored on an errant throw. On the very next pitch, Elijah stole third and once again scored on a throw that got past the Rippowam third baseman.  The run for the Cougars tied the game at three.  In the bottom of the seventh, Connor Langan shut down the Rippowam offense to secure the tie.  At the plate, John Esposito (2 hits, 1 run scored and 1 hit by pitch) and Alex Burch (double and 1 RBI) were major contributors for Stanwich.

The Stanwich School tennis team won their opening match over Brunswick by a score of 5-4 on a beautiful day at Bruce Park. Matt Smith played a competivite match at #1 singles, but lost a close one 6-4. Emily Moran at #2 singles evened the match at one when she won her match 6-4. Will Taufield played #3 singles and realized he could not out-hit his opponent so he mixed up his shots to change the pace of play. His match came down to an exciting tie-breaker where he won 7-4. Arden Orwicz and Barbara Duncan won easily at #3 doubles. Thomas Hickman and Noah Hoffman won their doubles match by a score of 6-2. Coach Tar was very proud of the team's effort and sportsmanship. The Cougars look forward to a great season.

The Stanwich School 7/8 boys' lacrosse team lost a tough game to Masters in front of a capacity crowd in the first game played at the new, turf field at Stanwich Road.  It was a very evenly matched game as both teams played their hardest.  Masters scored the first goal of the game.  The Cougars bounced back and scored the next two goals of the game to take a 2-1 lead.  Will Meeker and Nick Daetwiler were the goal scores for Stanwich.  However, Masters came back with two goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead going into halftime.  The two teams battled back and forth in the third quarter, but neither team was able to score.  Alex Cohen was a standout in goal for the Cougars as he made save after save.  The momentum swung back in Stanwich's favor when Locke McGee scored on a great individual effort to tie the game at 3. Masters was able to take control of the game when they scored the next goal to go up 4-3.  The Cougars battled hard in the final minutes but they could not get any closer.  In the end, Stanwich fell by a score of 6-3. Stanwich looks to earn its first win of the season when they host King on Monday, April 23 at 3:15pm.

In a rematch from the first game of the season, the 7/8 boys' basketball team faced off against St. Aloysius on February 21. Stanwich jumped out to an early lead on some strong inside play from Elijah Tateishi. Matt Smith also hit a couple of outside shots to pad the lead for the Cougars. St. Aloysius did not back down and managed to keep themselves in the game. During the early stages of the third quarter, St. Aloysius cut the Stanwich lead down to one. However, the Cougars showed the signs of a good team and started to pull away. Matt Smith hit a 3-pointer and John Esposito and Ian Peeler made buckets to increase the Stanwich lead to eight at the start of the 4th quarter. It was the Ian Davis show during the 4th quarter as he made bucket after bucket to help Stanwich maintain its lead. Ian dominated the 4th quarter by over powering St. Aloysius for rebounds and second chance points. When the final buzzer sounded, Stanwich was a 39-32 winner.  The Cougars will close out their season when they host Wilton-Montessori at the Old Greenwich Civic Center on February 22.

The Stanwich School 7/8 girls' basketball team blew over the St. Luke's Storm in their last home game of the season.  The girls were fired up to play in front of a record crowd at the Old Greenwich Civic Center.  The energy and enthusiasm of the afternoon permeated the court and enabled the girls to experience a large "home court" advantage.  The Storm struck quickly in the first half matching Stanwich's early run.  However, after the first quarter, Stanwich slowly calmed the Storm and pulled ahead.  Emily Moran led the offensive charge that enabled Stanwich to pull away from St. Luke's.  Defense was also a key factor in the Stanwich second quarter run.  Late in the quarter, Coach Angelis switched up her defense to catch St. Luke's off guard.  Great anticipation by Alina Make and Barbara Duncan in the 1-2-1-1 trap caused several turnovers which led to Stanwich buckets.  Stanwich went into halftime with a comfortable lead and a great deal of confidence.  The teams and spectators enjoyed a special halftime, as the Stanwich Dribblers, a second and third grade dribbling program, wowed the crowd with an excellent performance of their dribbling skills.  The team started strong in the second half and never looked back. In the end, Stanwich rolled to a 32-24 victory. Offensively, Moran led the way, but Stanwich received key buckets by Bridge Bojic, Daisy Mayer, Taryn Henderson and Alna Maki.  With the win, Stanwich increased their winning streak to 3 and raised their record to 5-2.  Stanwich will close out its season where they head to Greenwich Catholic on February 23.

The Stanwich School hockey team posted its second win in a row with a 5-1 victory of the New Canaan Country School.  It was a hotly contested battle during the first two periods of the game. Stanwich managed to open up a 2-0 lead after the second period on goals by Connor Langan and Sybren Hoekstra. Things got a little tight for the Cougars in the opening minutes of the final period when New Canaan scored to cut the Stanwich lead to 2-1.  However, Stanwich took control of the game in the final eight minutes and scored the next three goals to close out New Canaan.  Alex Dunn scored two goals and Connor Langan added another tally for the Cougars. Avery Wasson, Lucy Burnett, Eloise Petersen and Kelly Spector played strong on offense all game by consistently applying pressure on the New Canaan goalie.  The defense, led by Will Meeker and Lily Blackwell, was solid throughout the game.  Goalie Locke McGee was outstanding all game long.  The Cougars will finish up the season when they travel to Rye Country Day on February 23.

The Stanwich School squash team had another competitive and fun match against Fairfield Country Day on February 13. Unfortunately, the squash team fell by the score of 9-3. Alex Cohen and Daniel Gusinski, playing at # 2 and #3, won their matches easily in 2 games. Luke Martin also picked up a win in 2 games. There were many other exciting matches played. Lindsey Pitts dropped a close match, wining the second game and falling in the third game 11-9. Andrew Mosellie fought hard in a three game match. Paul Grasso served well and improved his service return, but could not pull out a victory in his match. The squash team finishes up their season when they play King at the Sportsplex in Stamford on February 21.

The Stanwich School squash team earned a convincing win over St. Luke's on February 7.  Coach Stephens was pleased with her team's play, effort and sportsmanship against the weaker St. Luke's team.  Ethan Stroud led off for the Cougars and won handily.  The rest of the Cougars followed suit.  Lindsey Pitts found herself in a close match.  She showed great concentration and determination and prevailed 12-10 in the third game.  When all was said and done, the Cougars had won 11 of 12 matches on the day.  The Cougars look for win number three on the season when they travel to Fairfield Country Day on February 13.

The Stanwich School 7/8 boys' basketball team got back on the winning track with a 47-41 win over Unquowa on February 7.  Coach Higle was happy to see his boys play their best game of the season against Unquowa.  At one point during the game, the Cougars went on a 9 of 10 shooting stretch to open up a big lead.  The most impressive part of the shooting display was that none of the shots were lay-ups.  It was a total team effort as all the players contributed in their own way and helped build a 20 point lead in the third quarter.  Unquowa went on a little run during the middle of the fourth quarter, but the boys finished off the game strong and walked away with the victory.  The Cougars look to extend the winning streak to two when they travel to Rippowam-Cisqua on February 13.

The Stanwich School 7/8 girls' basketball team traveled to New York to face Rippowam-Cisqua on February 6. With hopes to extend their win streak and accomplish a few of the goals that they set prior to the season, Stanwich appoached the game with great enthusiasm and a strong will to win. Stanwich had been playing with a lot of confidence as they approached the last third of the season. The Cougars pounced on Rippowam right from the tip-off. Stanwich's strong defensive pressure caused multiple Rippowam turnovers which Stanwich easily converted into made buckets. Emily Moran kept Rippowam's defense on their toes by posing as a threat as both a perimeter shooter and a driver. By keeping Rippowam's defense honest, Stanwich was able to take advantage of the gaps and holes that were created for them offensively. As result, Stanwich had several players who posted points for the first time this season. With the win, Stanwich improved their record to 4-2.

The Stanwich School won its first-ever JV boys' basketball game this week, topping the French-American School decisively 30-24.  The win marks a historic milestone for the growing school and led to a lot of smiles among the boys and coaches.  It was an all-around team win.  Swift passes, teamwork and consistent outside shooting were the keys to success.  RJ Mullins, Pete Agro, Sam Hoffman and Thomas Hickman all scored multiple points or got steals to set up their teammates.  Noah Hoffman scored two and had key defensive plays, while Andrew Bologna nearly took the game over by making shot after shot from the baseline-he scored 10 points in total-and he followed a teammate's miss with a put-back that seemed to propel Stanwich in the fourth quarter.  Defense may have truly won the day, Stanwich led by as many as 11 and kept the French-American school from gaining any momentum.  Jimmy Murphy, David Rivera and Jose Maita played well on both ends of the floor. John Lombardo and Gregg Febbraio also had keys plays and contributed mightily.  Injured Randy Maldonado assisted the coaches and witnessed the big win.  Following the game, they yelled "History!" as they broke their final hurdle of the day, realizing what they had accomplished.  "100% improvement on defense, offense, teamwork, hitting other men," said Vito Bochicchio, a  Stanwich fan in attendance.  "Overall, it was a great game, and the best game of the seaon."  Stanwich fans nearly outnumbered fans of the French-American School holding signs and cheering loudly.  "Great win on my birthday," said Coach Suro, thanking his team.  "We executed the plays, hit shots from the outside, played tough defense and didn't turn the ball over nearly as much.  That's how we win."

The Stanwich School 7/8 boys' basketball team lost another heart-breaker to Greenwich Country Day by a score of 39-34.  The Cougars got standout performances from Matt Smith, Elijah Tateishi, Alex Burch, Ian Peeler and John Esposito.  Elijah led the way with 9 points.  Alex Burch helped out with 7 points, including a 3-pointer.  It was a back and forth affair between the Tigers and the Cougars. GCDS was able to take advantage on the boards and scored some key second chance points to take the lead.  However, the "Cardiac Cougars" would not go down without a fight.  They turned up the pressure in the final quarter to cut the GCDS lead to 3 points, but they could not climb all the way back.  The boys continue to display great effort and maturity on the court.  The Cougars look to halt their losing skid when they host Unquowa on February 7 at the Stamford Athletic Club.

The Stanwich School hockey team won their first game of the season against Greenwich Academy on January 31.  The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and never looked backed.  The first two goals by Stanwich came from Sybren Hoekstra and both goals were assisted by Connor Langan.  Connor Langan made it 3-0 in favor of Stanwich in the final minutes of the first period.  However, Greenwich Academy bounced back and scored two goals in the second period to cut the Stanwich lead to 3-2.  Lucy Burnett answered back for the Cougars to put Stanwich up 4-2.  Greenwich Academy added another goal to slice the lead to 4-3 for Stanwich at the end of two periods.  Stanwich made a strong statement to open the third period by scoring two goals to put the game out of reach.  Sydney Burnett collected her second goal of the game, and Will Meeker finished off the scoring for the Cougars.  Greenwich Academy scored one final goal to end the scoring for the day. At the sound of the final horn, Stanwich was the winner by a final score of 6-4.

Although vastly outnumbered and playing away from home, the JV boys managed a strong game against Brunswick on January 25, but came up on the short side of a 40-25 score. Even with the recent injury to Randy Maldonado, Stanwich continually fought back on Brunswick's home floor. In an intense fourth quarter, the boys gave it their all. RJ Mullins led the way with 10 points. Sam Hoffman chipped in with 7 points, and Gregg Febbraio added 5 points. Peter Agro, Thomas Hickman and Andrew Bologna also contributed with deft passing and key steals. John Lombardo, David Rivera, Jose Maita and Jimmy Murphy played tough defense giving Stanwich a chance to cut the lead to 4 several times. Noah Hoffman played a great game, with a steal and an assist down the stretch. The key to the game was defense. Though Brunswick took a quick lead, the Stanwich defense kept the game within reach. "Stanwich played with pride and heart," said Brunswick Coach Johnny Montanez. "They represented their school with class and worked very hard." The Stanwich coaches were pleased with the team's progress. "The guys executed the plays we called," said Coach Katona. "We played good, tough defense. Offensively, we are improving, and if we cut down on turnovers, we will bring many victories home." The JV boys are looking forward to their next game against French-American on February 1.

The Stanwich School 7/8 girls' basketball team hosted the Dragons of Greens Farms Academy on January 24 at the Stamford Athletic Center. The Dragons made a few quick buckets to jump out to an early lead over the Cougars. Emily Moran answered by netting a few points for Stanwich to put them on the board and kept the Cougars within striking distance of the Dragons. Cami Lavoie put great pressure on the Dragon's point guard which led to turnovers and offensive possessions for Stanwich. Emily Conn, Taryn Henderson and Bridget Bojic worked hard on the boards and prevented few second chance opportunities for GFA. However, strong perimeter shooting by Greens Farms enabled them to keep a four point lead going into halftime. The Dragons came out hot in the second half and hit some outside jumpers to increase the lead. Stanwich clawed their way back into the game with a great defensive effort and by taking the ball strong to the basket. Brenna Carbone and Barbara Duncan pressured the Dragon guards and forced them into traps while Daisy Mayer and Alina Maki helped contain GFA's offensive push. Emily Moran was able to net a few outside shots to keep Stanwich in the game. However, when the final horn sounded, Stanwich came up short losing to Greens Farm Academy 29-19. Coach Angelis was proud of the heart and determination the girls displayed going into the final minutes of the game.

The Stanwich School 7/8 boys' basketball lost a nail-biter to Western Middle School by a score of 31-30.  Stanwich and Western battled back and forth all game.  Stanwich had a chance to win the game on the final possession, but Matt Smith was knocked to the ground with no foul called as the buzzer sounded.  Elijah Tateishi led the way offensively for the Cougars, as he poured in 12 points and grabbed numerous rebounds.  Edward Foran played a strong game moving the ball from his guard position.  The boys were disappointed with the final score, but Coach Higle was extremely proud of how the boys played.  As a result, the boys' left the Western gym with their heads held high.  The 7/8 boys' basketball team look to rebound when they host Greens Farms Academy on January 25 at the Old Greenwich Civic Center.

The Stanwich 7/8 girls' basketball team hosted Greenwich Catholic on January 17 for their first home game of the season. Stanwich got into foul trouble early in the first quarter with two of the Cougars picking up three fouls. Greenwich Catholic took the ball strong to the basket and took advantage of the conservative Stanwich defense. Greenwich Catholic's strong offensive push enabled them to take an early lead going into the second quarter. From then on, Stanwich fought hard to dig themselves out of the hold they created. Strong offensive play led by Emily Moran enabled Stanwich to chip away at Greenwich Catholic's lead. At the end, Stanwich came up short by a score of 28-24. Despite the loss, the girls played well and communicated with each other on the floor. On the offensive end they started to instinctively set screens in their offensive sets. The Cougars look to start a new winning streak when they host Greens Farms on January 24.

The Stanwich School 7/8 boys' basketball team traveled to Rippowam-Cisqua and secured their second win in a row with a 38-27 victory. Again, the boys demonstrated great sportsmanship against a weaker team. The Cougars executed their plays to perfection and played well in all facets of the game. Every player on the team scored a basket, tallied a rebound and swiped a steal during the game. Helping contribute to the win were Lukens Boolbol, Alex Burch, John Esposito, Edward Foran, Chance Noonan, Ian Peeler, Matt Smith, Ian Davis, Nick Sheer and Elijah Tateishi. The Cougars look to make it three in a row when they meet up with Fairfield Country Day on January 19.

The Stanwich School hockey team played hard in their first game after a long break.  Their rustiness showed as they fell behind 3-0 in the first five minutes of the game.  As is with the case with all Stanwich teams, the hockey players did not give up.  Connor Langan scored in the closing minutes of the first period to make the score 3-1.  From here on out, the Cougars controlled the play in the offensive zone, but could not capitalize on numerous scoring chances. Harvey was able to put another goal on the board, but Connor Langan got one right back for Stanwich.  Harvey scored again to up the lead to three after two periods. Stanwich went for broke in the third period and applied continuous pressure on Harvey.  Avery Wasson, Will Taufield, Alex Dunn and Sybren Hoekstra got off good shots on goal, but they could not get it by the Harvey goalie.  Will Meeker cut the Harvey lead to 5-3 when he scored on a wonderful, individual effort. Connor Langan scored his third goal of the game on a beautiful feed from Will Meeker to make the score 6-4.  Even though they tried their hardest to score again, the Cougars could not get any closer in the final seconds of the game. 

The 7/8 boys' basketball team won its first game of the season with a convincing 36-15 victory against King. The boys demonstrated great compassion by not running up the score against a weaker opponent. The Cougars were led by Matt Smith, who scored 11 points and tallied six steals. Alex Burch contributed 6 points and a handful of offensive rebounds. It was a total team effort by Stanwich as they had numerous players in the scoring column. The Cougars look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Rippowam-Cisqua on January 11.

The Stanwich School 7/8 girls' basketball team traveled to Holy Child for their second game of the season.  On the first possession of the game Brenna Carbone got fouled taking the ball to the hoop strong and converted her first free throw to put Stanwich on the board in the first twenty seconds of the game.  After the first point, Stanwich never looked back.  Barbara Duncan and Cami Lavoie pressured the Holy Child guards on defense causing them to turn over the ball several times.  Emily Moran was able to convert the Holy Child turnovers into points for the Cougars which enabled the team to maintain a steady lead for the entire game.  Taryn Henderson, Bridget Bojic, Arden Orwicz and Daisy Mayer did a wonderful job rebounding the ball.  Alina Maki made a deep two-pointer at the buzzer to put Stanwich ahead by ten after the third quarter.  Stanwich played strong in the fourth quarter and went home with a 25-15 win. 

The Stanwich School 7/8 girls' basketball team opened up their season with an 18-16 win against the St. Luke's Storm.  Emily Moran led the offensive charge by nailing a handful of buckets from the perimeter and adding a few fast break points.  The Cougars were able to hold back the Storm due to a strong defensive performance from Arden Orwicz, Brenna Carbone and Alina Maki. The Storm crept their way back into the game to bring it within two points with 30 seconds left, but the Stanwich defense stayed strong to win the game 18-16.  The Cougars look forward to playing Holy Child on January 10.

The Stanwich School squash team opened their season in an evenly played matched against Fairfield Country Day.  The Cougars battled hard, but fell by a score of 5-2.  Stanwich started out strong when Ethan Stroud dropped his opponent in straights games, 11-5 and 11-8.  Ethan kept his opponent off stride by hitting the ball deep and hitting many effective rails.  Daniel Gusinski also won his match by taking the first game 11-8 and battling to a win in the second game, 15-13.  Coach Stephens was impressed by the play of Peter Ferrarese, Lindsey Pitts and Matt Collins. All three of them gave a wonderful effort and extended their opponents to three games.  Stanwich is eagerly awaiting the rematch with Fairfield Country Day on February 13.  The Cougars next match will be on January 12 against Hackley.

The Stanwich School hockey team dropped its first game of the season to Fairfield Country Day by a score of 6-2.  Fairfield jumped out early and scored three goals in the first six minutes of the game.  Stanwich settled down and played the FCDS even for the rest of the period.  In the second period, Fairfield continued to apply the pressure, but goalie Locke McGee was there to turn them away. The defense of Will Meeker, Alex Dunn, Mattijs Hoekstra, Lily Blackwell and Will Taufield were solid and did a nice job of getting the puck out of the Stanwich zone.  Stanwich was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the final minutes of the second period when Connor Langan shot a laser past the Fairfield goalie. The other goal was scored on a great second effort in front of the net by Will Taufield.  In the end, it was not enough, as Stanwich fell by a score of 6-2.  Stanwich is looking forward coming back after the break and facing Harvey on January 10.

The Stanwich School 7/8 boys' basketball team opened their season with a 41-33 loss to St. Aloysius. The boys started off a little slow, which was to be expected in the first game, and got down early in the first half. Matt Smith and John Esposito had buckets in the first half, but it was not enough as the Cougars fell behind by 15 at halftime. However, in typical Stanwich fashion, the Cougars rallied in the second half and put together a nice run to end the game. Ian Davis was unstoppable in the second half, as he poured in 11 points and had a beautiful assist on a score by John Esposito. Smith also got hot in the second half and finished with 10 points. Also chipping buckets in the second half were Alex Burch and John Esposito. Elijah Tateishi was a monster on the glass, grabbing rebound after rebound. All in all, Coach Higle was pleased with his team's effort and has a lot to build on when they return from break. The Cougars look to find the win column when they travel to King on January 10, 2012.

The Stanwich School finished their season with an impressive showing at the Middle School Fairchester Athletic Association Championship Meet.  Leading the way for the Cougars was Arden Orwicz, as she won the Championship race in the 7th Grade Girls' Division with a time of 17:20.  Following right behind her was Emily Moran, as she captured 2nd place in the 7th Grade Girls' Division with a time of 17:40.  Clark Vazquez also had a strong showing as he finished the race in 14th place.  To cap off the winning day for Stanwich, Arden Orwicz was awarded 3rd place in the season long points race in the 7th Grade Girls' Division, and Emily Moran took home 4th place in the season the long points race in the 7th Grade Girls' Division.  Congratulations to all the runners (David Moffitt, Jack DeNicola, Clark Vazquez, Emily Moran, Brenna Carbone, Arden Orwicz, Taryn Henderson, Lindsey Pitts and Katie Conn) on a remarkable season!

In their final game of the season, the Stanwich football team again showed heart and resiliency in a comeback that fell just short by losing 14-12 to Fairfield Country Day. Quarterback Connor Langan, who had scored earlier in the game on a long run, led a final drive which brought the trailing Cougars within 2 points on a rainbow pass to Elijah Tateishi. While the 2-point conversion fell short, the Stanwich players closed the gap against Fairfield Country Day bringng them within inches of another tieing the game.

In other highlights from the game, Ian Peeler made a second half interception off a tipped pass by Matt Smith which ended FCDS's momentum in the second half.  Lukens Boolbol also knocked down a pass earlier in the drive, and Chance Noonan nearly picked off a deep pass playing free safety.  Hard running by John Esposito kept drives alive for the Cougars who walked off the field with their heads held high and as a much improved team from early in the season.  The commitment of the team to each other, their coaches and to be noble and gracious competitors was evident through their close losses, big wins and major comebacks this season.  The team expressed gratituge and a sense of great accomplishment after the game.

The Stanwich School football won its big game this week against Greenwich Country Day by a score of 14-6. The huge win came in front of a large crowd of Stanwich parents, students and fans and showed the team's commitment to each other and the sport. Behind stellar blocking by the offensive line (Sean Hayes, Charlie Recchia, Locke McGee, Paul Grasso and Andrew Mosellie), Connor Langon passed and ran for scores in the first half, giving the Cougars a 14-0 lead. The first score came on the third play of the game when Langon hit Elijah Tateishi with a short pass that Tateishi brought all the way to the end zone for a touchdown.  Ian Peeler caught the 2-point conversion to put the Cougars up 8-0.  Defensively, behind the strong play of Alex Burch (interception to end the half) and John Esposito, Stanwich did not allow a sustained drive all game. Sharp tackling and physical play helped the Cougars throughout the game. The Cougars look to end the season on a high note when they travel to Fairfield Country Day on November 7 looking to avenge a heartbreaking loss from earlier in the season.

The 7/8 boys' soccer team posted an impressive 4-0 win over Greenwich Country Day. The Cougars started off strong and never looked back.  They controlled both sides of the ball and kept their intensity throughout the game.  Packing the offensive punch for Stanwich were Matthijs Hoekstra and Alex Bernsten.  The dynamic duo scored two goals each for the Cougars. Posting the shut-out in goal for Stanwich was Will Meeker.  The Cougars received a solid effort from every member of the team, including Andrew Smith, Jack Schoen, Will Taufield and Will Larkin. Stanwich looks to continue its winning ways when they host Brunswick at Stanwich East on November 3.

The Stanwich School JV boys' soccer team played a tremendous second half to cruise to a 6-1 victory against Brunswick. The Cougars went up 1-0 when Sam Hoffman intercepted a goal kick and blasted a shot past the Brunswick goal keeper. Stanwich had numerous scoring chances in the first half, but the Brunswick goal keeper kept the Cougars at bay.  Brunswick managed to tie the game up with about 10 minutes to play in the first half.  However, in the final minutes of the first half, Sam Hoffman put Stanwich up to stay when he scored on a penalty kick.  Stanwich controlled the tempo in the second half and put up four more goals to close out the Bruins from Brunswick.  Sam Hoffman scored one more goal to complete the hat trick.  RJ Mullins used speed and determination to score two goals for the Cougars.  Andrew Bologna continued his scoring ways with a goal in the final minutes.  The Stanwich defense was solid, and JC Zumaeta exceled in his multi-purpose role for the Cougars. Noah Hoffman also had a fine day at midfield as he helped lead the Stanwich offensive attack.  The JV boys look to continue their winning ways when they close out their season against Hackley on November 1.

The Stanwich School JV Boys' soccer team recorded the first JV victory in Stanwich School history as they defeated King 3-2 in a tightly contested battle.  Things did not start off smoothly for the Cougars as they missed a penalty kick and allowed a goal to King in the first ten minutes of the game. Stanwich quickly regrouped and scored on a goal by Andrew Bologna.  The Bologna goal was set up wonderfully on a cross from Timmy Agro.  King, however, would go up again when they scored in the final minutes of the first half.  In the second half, the Cougars came out strong and began to control play.  Sam Hoffman, Tim Agro and Thomas Hickman controlled the middle of the field.  David Rivera, Gregg Febbraio, Jose Maita and John Lombardo played well on defense and did not allow the King offensive players to get close to the goal.  Stanwich's hard work finally paid off when Sam Hoffman put one in the back of the goal to even the game up at 2.  The boys from Stanwich were not done yet, as they scored the go ahead goal when Andrew Bologna redirected a crossing pass past the King goal keeper.  The Stanwich defense did its job the rest of the way and secured the 3-2 victory for the Cougars.

In another close and rousing football game, Stanwich used strong 1st and 4th quarters to keep up with Brunswick in a 22-16 loss.  The Cougars took an initial lead midway through the first quarter on a pass over the middle from Connor Langan to Elijah Tateishi.  The offensive line protected the quarterback well and Stanwich took an 8-0 lead into halftime following the successful 2-point conversion.  The Cougars offense put together several more successful drives, featuring hard running by John Esposito, solid blocking by the offfensive line and precise route running by the Stanwich wide receivers. On defense, the Cougars kept Brunswick scoreless in the first half, but was unable to make a key stop as the Bruins pushed their lead to 16-8 in the 4th quarter. Stanwich mounted their second comeback in as many games and tied the score at 16, only to lose the lead with a minute remaining. A last gasp effort started well, with a completed pass setting up Stanwich at midfield, but the drive ended as time ran out on the next play.

The Stanwich School 7/8 boys' soccer team played tough and battled Resurrection to a 4-4 tie. After going down 2-0 early in the first half, the Cougars battled back with two goals of their own by Matthijs Hoekstra and Alex Bernsten. Behind excellent goalkeeping by Will Meeker, the boys gained an edge in the second half with another goal off the foot of Matthijs Hoekstra. Resurrection responded with two quick goals, one being an own goal off a deflection past the diving Meeker. With under two minutes to play, Sybren Hoekstra broke loose and deposited his first goal of the year to even the score at 4-4. Stanwich had one more opportunity in the final seconds, but Matthijs Hoekstra's penalty shot sailed just over the cross bar. The Cougars hope to build on their good start when they face King on October 13 at Stanwich East.

The Stanwich School JV boys' soccer team made history as they participated in the first high school game for Stanwich School. In typical Stanwich fashion, the boys' gave it their all and showed tremendous support for each other during their game against Hackley. From the get go, the Cougars did not play like a team that has little soccer experience. The boys played fundamentally sound and played with a purpose. Stanwich fell behind 3-0 in the first half. However, the boys did not panic and started to put things together in the second half. Timmy Agro put the Cougars on the board with a beautiful left-footed shot. Andrew Bologna kept things going for Stanwich as he found the back of the net to make the score 3-2 in favor of Hackley. The Cougars continued to press the issue in the closing minutes, but they could not get the equalizer. There were many standout performances for Stanwich.  Pete Agro was outstanding in goal, as he turned aside many shots and went after the ball with reckless abandon.  Gregg Febbraio, RJ Mullins, Jon Lombardo and David Rivera were superb on defense as they turned back Hackley time and time again.  Coach Fletcher was extremely proud of his troops and is looking forward to their upcoming game on October 12 when they host French-American.

The Stanwich School cross country team started off the season in spectacular fashion with a very strong performance at the Brunswick meet. The 2.4 mile course proved to be no obstacle for Arden Orwicz. Out of over eighty runners, Orwicz, a 7th grader, finished 6th overall. Most impressively, she was the first female runner to cross the finish line. Emily Moran and Clark Vazquez also finished in the top twenty for Stanwich (16th and 19, respectively). The next meet is scheduled for October 6 at Greenwich Country Day School.

The Stanwich School JV Boy's Soccer team lost an entertaining match to French-American. The Cougars started off shaky and quickly fell behind 2-0. The pesky Cougars fought back on a goal by Sam Hoffman to close the gap to 2-1. French American scored again in the closing minutes of the first half to go up by a score of 3-1. Stanwich regrouped at halftime and scored in the opening minutes of half number two on a penalty kick by Sam Hoffman. Once again the deficit for Stanwich was one goal. The Cougars could not close the gap any further as French-American scored the next two goals. However, Stanwich never stopped competing and scored two more goals. Sam Hoffman completed his hat trick and Andrew Bologna also put one in the back of the net for Stanwich. Stanwich had numerous scoring chances, but could not capitalize. RJ Mullins, Thomas Hickman, Tim Agro and Noah Hoffman had well struck shots, but they were turned aside by the goal keeper. When all was said and done, Stanwich fell by a score of 7-4. Coach Fletcher was pleased once again by the effort of his team and they look to get into the win column when they face Fairfield Country Day on October 13.

Behind a strong pitching performance from David Rivera and some key hits, the Stanwich baseball team defeated the Brunswick Bruins by a score of 9-1.  David Rivera was dominant on the mound, striking out five and only allowing tow hits.  David was also two for four at the plate and knocked in two runs.  Leadoff hitter, Eddie Meizels, had two hits, reached base all four times up and scored four runs.  In addition, Timmy Agro added two hits and three RBI's for the Cougars.  With the win, the Cougars improved to 1-1-1.

The Stanwich School girls' lacrosse team showed their true grit by coming from behind in the final minutes to earn an 11-11 tie with the Cougars from the New Canaan Country School. Stanwich fell behind 2-0 early in the game, but stormed back to take a 3-2 lead. The teams fought back and forth for the remainder of the half and headed into halftime with the scored tied at 7. Stanwich scored a couple of beautiful goals in the first half. Jenny Goggin scored on a wonderful feed from Cori Gabaldon. Jessica Borker also found the back of the net from a great set up in front of the goal. New Canaan came out firing in the second half and built an 11-8 lead with about eight minutes left in the game. At that point, Stanwich got down to business and scored three consecutive goals to knot the game at 11. Each team had their chances in the closing minutes, but neither team could pull out the victory. Stanwich goalkeeper, Leandra Warren, was outstanding in the final minutes and stopped several point blank shots.

The Stanwich School girls' lacrosse team recorded a last second 11-10 victory over Rippowam-Cisqua. The Cougars jumped out early to take a quick 2-0 lead. However, Rippowam battled back to score the next three goals. From then on, the teams battled back and forth the rest of the way. Neither team was able to get a firm control of the game. Stanwich found themselves down by one with a few minutes left, but they managed to tie the game on a goal by Jenny Goggin. Then, in the final seconds Daryl Kennedy was able to sneak one by the Rippowam goalkeeper to secure the win for the Cougars. The combination of Jenny Goggin and Ali Baird on face-offs was a major factor in the game as Stanwich was able to gain several extra possessions by gaining control of the ball.

The Stanwich School basketball team of Mr. Rogers won in thrilling fashion over Iona Grammar 34-31. Stanwich jumped out to an early first quarter lead with four buckets coming from Pete Agro. Thomas Hickman led the scoring in the second quarter as he poured in six points to give the Cougars a 16-11 halftime edge. However, Iona Grammar battle back and controlled the third quarter to go up 20-18 heading into the fourth quarter. Iona increased its lead in the opening minutes of the fourth period to make the score 27-20. The Cougars did not back down and went on a run of their own to take the lead 28-27. The teams battled back and forth the rest of the way, but Stanwich held on and recorded the victory. Leading the way for the Cougars was Pete Agro, as he poured in eighteen points. Thomas Hickman and Jonathan Rothschild each chipped in with eight points.

The Stanwich School squash team won back to back matches over King and Greens Farms.  On January 11, won a convincing 7-0 match against King. Coach Stephens was impressed with the sportsmanship her team displayed in their win over a very young King team.  On January 19, the Cougars continued their winning ways with a 6-1 victory over Greens Farms Academy. John Rohrbach started things off with a 12-10 and 11-2 victory.  The rest of the team followed suit and the Cougars cruised to their second victory in a row.

Coach St. Laurent's basketball team kicked off their season with a nail biter against Convent of the Sacred Heart on January 5. Stanwich took the lead on three quick points by Jessica Borker.  Sacred Heart held strong and crawled their way back to end the half up by four points.  Great defense by Remi Bohbot, Caroline Burch and Jessica Borker enabled Stanwich to remain within a few points of Sacred Heart going into the last minute of the game.  A quick basket with thirty seconds left pulled Stanwich within one point.  Strong defense created a Sacred Heart turnover with 2.8 seconds to go.  After a time out to talk things over, Esther Hoekstra executed a perfect length of the court pass to Jessica Borker with the clock ticking down.  Jessica got off a good shot, but it went just wide of the basket, dashing the comeback hopes of the Cougars. 

Girls' Soccer-St. Laurent clawed and fought their way back from a 3-0 deficit on Tuesday afternoon to finish off their season with a 3-3 tie against Rippowam-Cisqua.  Overlapping runs by the midfielders, led by Hannah Karlan, caught Rippowam off guard late in the second half.  With the defense on their heels, Esther Hoekstra blasted a shot into the net off a direct kick to start the offensive charge for Stanwich.  Shortly after, Jessica Borker scored two quick goals off of two beautiful crosses to help Stanwich end regulation with a 3-3 tie.  Stanwich's momentum carried over into the five minute overtime period.  However, Rippowam's defense stood strong and stopped Stanwich's attack.  Likewise, solid defense led by Claire Robins and Claudia Consuegra held Rippowam scoreless in the extra time.  The game was  a fun, exciting way to end a wonderful season. Go Cougars!

The Stanwich School field hockey team played a great game to tie St. Luke's in their final game of the season. The two teams were evenly matched and competed hard against each other. Stanwich controlled the ball for most of the game due to their speedy wingers, Juliann Whitman and Avery Wasson. Kelly Spector and Alexandra Ng made some beautiful passes to set up teammates, but Stanwich could not put the ball in the goal. It was not until late in the first half that Stanwich finally connected. Kelly Spector put a shot on goal and Juliann quickly pounced on the rebound to put Stanwich up 1-0. Things were looking good for the Cougars until St. Luke's scored to tie the game with 28 seconds left in the game! Coach Stephens was thrilled with the effort from her team.

The Stanwich School boys' soccer recorded an impressive 4-2 win over Brunswick.  Stanwich fell behind 1-0 early on, but quickly bounced back when Sam Hoffman took a pass off the kickoff and scored on a breakaway to even the score.  Brunswick came back to go up 2-1 heading into halftime.  The Cougars came out storming in the second half and had goals from Alex Cohen and another from Sam Hoffman.  In the closing minutes of the game, Tim Agro put the game away on a shot from nearly half field.  The defense for the Cougars was strong all game with Jonathan Rothschild and Will Larkin leading the way.  Peter Ferrarese played well in the back and had some great touches on the ball that helped lead to breakaways.  The Cougars look to wrap up their season when they host Greenwich Country Day on November 8.

The Stanwich School cross country team capped off a fine season with a strong showing in the Fairchester Athletic Association' s Middle School Championship meet. The closing meet was held at the course at the Convent of the Sacred Heart.  Stanwich was familiar with the course since they ran there twice before in the season.  Acacia Dougan finished her season with a fourth place finish in the 8th grade girls' division. Reed McMurchy placed in the top fifteen of all the runners in the race. This was a personal best for Reed. Rui Aguiar improved his best time at the course by four seconds. Cooper Robinson managed to improve his time at the Convent of the Sacred Heart course by over two minutes! Natasja Houghton improved her best time by almost a minute. Coach Riveles was thrilled with his team's effort and determination throughout the season.

The Stanwich School field hockey earned their first victory of the season with a 2-1 over Hackley. Stanwich controlled most of the attack in the first half with Daryl Kennedy, Ana Lenskiy and Alina Make dominating the play. The Cougar forwards continuously gave great through passes to each other. Kelly Spector got things rolling for Stanwich when she scored the first goal of the game. Hackley thought they had the equalizer when they scored with just seconds remaining in the first half, but the goal was disallowed when a Hackley girl kicked the ball. Hackley put pressure on in the second half, but Becca Latto was solid on defense and broke up many plays. In the closing moments of the game, Ana Lenskiy sealed the win with a goal off of a penalty corner. Mrs. Stephens was pleased with the team's effort and looks forward to ending the season strong against St. Luke's.

The Stanwich School girls' soccer team of Ms. St. Laurent recorded an impressive 2-1 win over New Canaan Country School. In the first half, each team had their chances, but neither team could put one in the goal. In the opening moments of the second half Stanwich finally capitalized on their opportuniy when Sophie Ertel found the back of the net to make the score 1-0 in favor of Stanwich. A few minutes later, the Cougars from New Canaan scored to tie the game. It looked like that the game would end in a tie, but the Cougars from Stanwich staged one final offensive push. This push resulted in the game winning goal by Jessica Borker. Coach St. Laurent was real proud of her team and the effort they forth against a very good New Canaan team.

The Stanwich School girls' soccer team of Mr. Dunn staged  a big second half comeback against St. Luke's to secure a 3-3 tie.  Stanwich fell behind early when St. Luke's scored on a penalty kick.  The Cougars did not get discouraged and scored on a penalty kick off the foot of Jasmine Brouwer to even the game at one.  The score remained deadlocked at one at the end of the first half.  St. Luke's came out flying at the start of the second  half and scored two goals to make the score 3-1.  Once again, Stanwich showed its grit and inched a bit closer when Eloise Petersen scored.  In the closing moments of the game, the Cougars completed their comeback when Sarah Sheer tracked down the ball and made a beautiful shot right over the St. Luke's goalie to tie the game at three.  Coach Dunn was very pleased with the effort and determination that his squad showed, and they look to continue their solid play when they play Greens Farms to close out their season on November 9.

The Stanwich School girls' soccer team of Mr. Dunn battled Windward to a 1-1 tie in a tightly contested match-up.  In the opening minutes of the game, Windward was able to sneak one in to make the score 1-0.  However, Stanwich did not panic and was able to regroup.  The Stanwich defense was solid throughout the game with Sydney Brodie, Isabelle Robinson and Sara Alva keeping the ball from out in from of the Stanwich goal.  The Stanwich offensive was aggressive and put constant pressure on the Windward defense.  Remi Bohbot was all over the place for the Cougars. Numerous times she stopped the ball on defense and quickly got the ball upfield to teammates to create offensive opportunities.  Stanwich's relentless play finally paid off in the opening moments of the second half when Caroline Drennen put on behind the Windward keeper on a scrum in front of the goal.  Both teams battled back and forth for the rest of the game, but neither team could break the tie.

The Stanwich School football team extended their winning streak to three with a tightly contested 16-12 victory over Rippowam-Cisqua. The way things started for the Cougars it looked like it would be an easy day for Stanwich. The Cougars put up a score seconds into the game on a beautiful thrown pass by Eddie Meizels to Grayson Bubrosky that covered sixty-five yards. Stanwich was able to capitalize on the two-point conversion on a pass from Meizels to RJ Mullins to make the score 8-0 in favor of Stanwich. The Stanwich defense went right to work after the score and shut down Rippowam-Cisqua. The Cougars got the ball back and moved the ball down the field. After a few nice runs by Andrew Bologna, Stanwich ran a perfectly executed middle screen pass from Meizels to Bologna to score the second touchdown of the game. The timing of the pass and the blocks of the offensive line were perfect!  Once again, the Cougars were successful on the two-point try to increase the score to 16-0. Rippowam was not done and managed a score of their own to cut the deficit to 16-6. In the closing moments of the first half, it looked like Rippowam was going to score again, but the Stanwich defense forced Rippowam to fumble on the one yard line to prevent the score. The teams traded punts in the third quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter, Rippowam managed to score again on a long pass to cut Stanwich's lead to 16-12. However, the Stanwich defense was determined not to let Rippowam score again, and they sealed the win when Grayson Bubrosky interecepted a pass with no time left on the clock. The Cougars look to run their winning streak to four when they travel to St. Luke's on October 21.

The Stanwich School football team continued its solid play with a 24-16 victory over Iona Grammar. The Cougars offense got things started quickly after they won the toss. On their opening drive, Stanwich moved the ball at will on the ground. Behind the blocking of David Rivera, Jeffrey Meeker, Mike Luisi, Chris Lucey, RJ Mullins, Dongju Lee and Killian Burosky, running back Andrew Bologna was able to gain yards by the bunches. On the final play of the drive, Bologna ran the ball in the end zone to make the score 6-0. The Stanwich defense was unable to stop Iona on its first possession, and Iona went up by a score of 8-6. When the Cougars got the ball back, it was more of the same from the ground game. This time Bologna scored from forty yards out to make it 12-8 in the favor of Stanwich.  The next time Iona had the ball, the Stanwich defense held strong and stopped the Gaels from Iona. With the ball back in their hands, the Cougars stuck quickly on a wonderful pass from Eddie Meizels to Grayson Bubrosky that covered sixty-five yards for the score. With the score 18-8 in the favor of Stanwich, Iona refused to give up and scored another touchdown and two-point conversion to make the score 18-16. Once again, the Stanwich offense showed its fine form. They methodically moved down the field on runs by Bologna, Bobby Goggin and Bennett Cooper. The Cougars finished off the drive and put the game away on another touchdown pass from Meizels. This time he hit RJ Mullins with a pass in the back of the end zone to finish the scoring and end the game with a 24-16 victory for Stanwich.

The Stanwich School boys' soccer team earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory against Rippowam-Cisqua. The Cougars came out firing in the opening minutes and quickly grabbed the lead on a goal by Logan Bohbot. The teams battled back and forth for the rest of the first half. Stanwich was solid on defense,with some strong play by Nico Wood-Olivan and Jacob Cohen. In the opening minutes of the second half, Rippowam staged a rally, but they were denied by some fine saves by Matt Rote. In the final minutes of the game, Stanwich started to put the pressure on again. Ian Davis just missed a goal on a nice cross by Logan Bohbot, and Noah Hoffman almost put one away to seal the game. The Cougars did not get discouraged by their near misses and put the game away on a goal by Sam Hoffman to make the score 2-0 and secure the victory. Stanwich looks to make it two in a row when they travel to Masters on October 18.

The Stanwich School girls' soccer team of Ms. St. Laurent played tough for sixty minutes in a well played match against the Tigers of Greenwich Country Day on October 6.  After great defensive play by Ali Baird, great midfield control by Mari Riera and solid goal keeping by Chelsea Foster, the Cougars ended the first half with a 0-0 tie.  Stanwich made a strong offensive push in the second half by pressuring the Tiger defense.  However, a strong Tiger keeper was able to stop the offensive attack of Esther Hoekstra and Claudia Consuegra. In the closing minutes of the game, GCDS was able to sneak on past the Stanwich defense to come out with a 1-0 victory over Stanwich.  The girls look to get another one in the win column when they host the Gators of Eastern on October 12.

The Stanwich School field hockey team put in an impressive effort against New Canaan Country School, but came up on the short side of of a 2-0 score. The Cougars controlled most of the offensive attack, but could not put one past the goal keeper of New Canaan. Daryl Kennedy, Kelly Spector and Elizabeth Robinson were all over the field, putting offensive and defensive pressure on the Cougars of New Canaan. Juliann Whitman was impressive at her right wing position and almost scored a couple of goals. Maddie Ha was brilliant in goal recording five saves. Coach Stephens was very proud of her team's effort and looks forward to their upcoming game against Holy Child

The Stanwich School girls' soccer team of Ms. St. Laurent had an impressive win against Central Middle School on October 4. Stanwich set the tone from the opening kickoff by scoring a goal in the first thirty seconds of the game. Esther Hoekstra led the offensive attack for Stanwich by tallying three goals. A strong defensive performance by Natalie Gustin and Cori Gabaldon held the Cougars of Central to very few shots on goal. Chelsea Foster finished the game with a shut out after a very impressive penalty kick save. A well played game by Stanwich ended with an 8-0 victory over Central.

The Stanwich School girls' soccer team of Mr. Dunn opened their season with a tough 1-0 loss to Convent of the Sacred Heart. The game was evenly played with both teams playing good defense. In the middle of the first half, Sacred Heart scored the only goal of the game. From then on, both teams played back and forth soccer, but no one could find the back of the goal. The girls look to improve on their good start when they travel to New Canaan Country School on October 5.

The Stanwich School girls' lacrosse team recorded an amazing comeback in their thrilling 8-8 tie against Hackley.  The Cougars came out flat against a strong Hackley team and fell behind 6-0 at halftime.  Things were not looking good for Stanwich, but the girls never gave up and remained positive.  As a result, they got themselves back in the game by scoring two quick goals by Jenny Goggin to open the half.  With a little momentum on their side, Stanwich really decided to kick things into gear and scored two more goals (Lexie Miller and Mari Riera) to cut the deficit to two goals.  A goal by Ali Baird and another by Lexie Miller tied the game at six.  At this point, nothing could stop the Cougars, and they added two more goals by Jenny Goggin to take an 8-6 lead.  The score remained 8-6 until Hackley scored two goals of their own to tie the game at eight. The teams battled back and forth for the final two minutes, but neither team could break the tie.  Throughout the game, the Cougars showed their grit and toughness and rallied around their injured player Natalie Gustin.  Playing a standout game on defense was Alex Ng who picked up numerous ground balls in the second half to help the Cougars maintain possession of the ball. Julia Akerman and Lexie Miller were also relentless in gaining loose balls in the offensive end.  The Cougars look to secure an undefeated season when they travel to Greenwich Catholic next week.

The Stanwich School baseball team lost their first game of the season in a close one to King. The Cougars were ahead for most of the game, but a late inning rally put the Vikings ahead for good by a score of 4-2. Tim Agro led the way at the plate collecting two hits, one RBI and scoring one run. In addition, Eddie Meizels had a double and Will Gittings and Gregg Febbraio contributed singles for the Cougars. Starting pitcher David Rivera went the distance on the mound and collected four strikeouts. Stanwich looks to get back on the winning track when they travel to Eastern Middle School.

The Stanwich School boys' lacrosse team played their best game of the season in a 9-4 win against Greenwich Country Day.  Stanwich opened the scoring right out of the gate on a goal by Clayton Burt less than a minute into the game.  Renwick Wilson scored a goal off of the next face off to make it 2-0.  The Cougars scored three more goals to go up 5-0 before GCDS scored their first goal of the game. With the game pretty much decided at that point, the teams traded goals the rest of the way.  When all was said and done, Killian Bubrosky finished with two goals and three assists.  Clayton Burt had three goals and two assists.  Also chipping in for the Cougars were Andrew White, who had two goals and an assist, and Renwick Wilson, who added a goal and two assists.  Rounding out the scoring with one goal was Bobby Goggin.  Alex Cohen played great in goal and had seven saves in the contest.

The Stanwich School softball completed the season with a tough 7-6 loss to a St. Luke's team who beat the girls earlier in the spring by a score of 11-3. The Cougars played their best overall game of the season in the loss. Pitchers, Caroline Burch and Natalie Puente, were close to the plate all game and did not give up more than two runs in any inning. The pitchers were backed up by some solid fielding, including two unassisted double plays by Kelly Spector. Chelsea Foster caught a fine game behind the plate and had a key assist to end a scoreless 2nd inning. Best of all, the team played good fundamental softball and were supportive until the very end. Trailing 7-4 going into their last at-bat, the girls rallied for two runs to make it close. Coach Alper and Coach Abbott were very pleased with the steady improvement the team made during the season.

The girls' lacrosse team continued its run of impressive play with an 11-5 victory over Greens Farms.  Stanwich came out strong on two quick goals by Sydney Cole and Ali Baird.  Greens Farms fought back and tied the game at two.  Stanwich pulled together and scored four unanswered goals to go up 6-2.  The Cougars continued to play well in the second half and rolled to an 11-5 victory.  Leading the scoring race was Sydney Cole and Jenny Goggin, as they scored three goals each.  Adding two goals was Ali Baird. Rounding out the scoring was Cori Gabaldon, Lexie Miller and Emiliy Wack. Coach Cardarelli was thrilled with the team's transition offense and the relentlessness of the defense. The defensive squad (Natalie Gustin, Olivia Berman, Justine Goggin, Maddie Haight, Acacia Dougan, Hayley Graham, Alex Ng, Mari Riera and Leandra Warren) did not give Greens Farms any room to shoot and helped seal the win for the Cougars.

The Stanwich School baseball team won again to improve to 4-0 on the season in a well played 3-2 win over Fairfield Country Day.  Early on the Cougars fell behind, but they battled back to tie the game at two in the fourth inning. The game remained tied until the last inning. With two outs, Eddie Meizels singled and stole second.  Will Gittings then smacked a triple to left center to score Meizels to put Stanwich up 3-2.  David Rivera was on the hill and pitched a complete game in the victory.

The Stanwich School softball team narrowly avoided snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in gaining their first win of the season, 13-12 against Greenwich Catholic. Jumping off to a quick three run lead in the first, the Cougars built a 7-0 advantage before allowing four runs in the bottom of the third. Four runs in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth extended the lead for Stanwich to 13-4. However, in the bottom of the last inning, the determined opponents rallied for eight runs to narrow the gap to a single run at the end. The Stanwich girls showed remarkable improvement at the plate. The heart of the order (Chelsea Foster, Natalie Puente and Kelly Spector) hit the ball hard every time up, and Caroline Burch scored three runs. Clare Ryan also hit the ball well, scored a run and played very well in her first game at shortstop. Sage Pierce and Esther Hoekstra continued to be anchors at 2nd and 3rd and got timely hits. Clare Hanlon did a great job at the plate as well. Pitching was a strength, as Natalie Puente worked three solid innings to start the game. The fielding play of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Kelly Spector caught a pop-up that bounced out of Caroline Burch's glove, then ran to first to double up the runner for an inning-ending double play.

The Stanwich School tennis team cruised to a 5-1 victory against Unquowa. Leading the way in singles was Grayson Bubrosky who won his match 8-2.  Scott Brown played valiantly, but came up on the short end of an 8-5 match.  The Stanwich Cougars swept all the doubles matches to earn the victory.  Sam Konolige and Grant Khosla closed out their match 8-5.  Jeffrey Meeker and and Charles Khosla had a tight match, but were able to pull out an 8-7 win. Alex Williams and Nick Bedrosian played well together and won their match 8-2.  The team of Allie Cooper and Max Cohen also played well and came away with an 8-4 victory. 

A no-hitter is something that all pitchers dream about. Some even go their entire careers without ever throwing one. We all know that David Rivera threw one in the first game of the season. Well, apparently David didn't feel like one was enough so he threw another one against Central Middle School in a 9-1 victory for the Cougars. Once again Rivera was outstanding on the mound as he struck out 13 batters. Logan Bohbot (3B), Eddie Meizels (CF), Timmy Agro (1B) and Will Gittings (C) were solid in the field and at the plate.  The Cougars look to extend their winning streak to three when they meet up with Fairfield Country Day on April 26.

The Stanwich School girls' lacrosse team ran their unbeaten streak three games with a convincing 9-4 win over Holy Child. Stanwich jumped out early and never looked back. At halftime, the Cougars led by a 3-1 score on goals by Ali Baird, Emily Wack and Jenny Goggin. The girls picked up a quick gaol by Jenny Goggin to bump the lead to 4-1. From there on out, Stanwich controlled the game and came away with the victory. When all was said and done, Jenny Goggin scored three goals. Sydney Cole and Allie Baird had two goals each. Lexie Miller and Emily Wack chipped in with a goal. Acacia Dougan and Tatiana Stroud shared duties in goal and made several key stops.  The goalies were helped on the defensive end by Justine Goggin, Emma Wagner, Leandra Warren, Olivia Bermand and Natalie Gustin. The girls look to continue its winning ways when they travel to Rye Country Day School.

The boys' lacrosse team continued to pick up wins as they beat Greenwich Catholic by a score of 12-3. The boys moved the ball well and created opportunities for themselves. Stanwich jumped out early, and they never looked back. Leading the way for the Cougars was Killian Bubrosky, as he tallied four goals. Chipping in with two goals were Ryan Flippin and Clayton Burt. Rounding out the goal scoring were Milo Judge, Paul Freeman, Sebi Hickman and Andrew White. Kota Otsuka and Alex Cohen split time in goal and prevented Greenwich Catholic from getting back in the game. Coach Radcliffe was very pleased with the effort and thrilled with the way the team handled itself in a one-sided affair.

The Stanwich School girls' lacrosse team battled back from injuries and a two goal deficit in the final 45 seconds to tie 7-7 against St. Luke's. Stanwich jumped on St. Luke's early as they scored in the opening minutes of the game.  However, the lead was short lived as St. Luke's anwered with two goals of their own.  The Cougars suffered another blow, as they lost one of their top forwards, Sydney Cole, to an ankle injury in the early part of the first half. The girls from Stanwich managed to keep it a one goal game for the remainder of the half. The teams battled back and forth in the second half, but things did not look good for Stanwich as St. Luke's went up by two and Stanwich lost another player (Claudia Consuegra-broken collarbone) to injury heading into the last minute of the game. However, the Cougars displayed the heart of a champion as Jenny Goggin scored two goals in the final forty-five seconds to tie the game at seven. Coach Cardarelli was thrilled with the effort and determination of his team.

The Stanwich School boys' lacrosse team got their season off on the right foot with a solid 12-9 victory over Greenwich Country Day School. Ryan Flippin (five goals) and Renwick Wilson (four goals) led the way offensively with combining for nine goals. Also scoring for the Cougars were Even Tesei (two goals) and Paul Freeman (one goal). At first, things did not look good for Stanwich as they trailed 2-1. However, Stanwich soon found its legs and took the lead 5-2. From there on out, Stanwich controlled the game and came away with the victory. Coach Radcliffe was pleased with the play of his defense, Philip Brauer, Matt Rote and Mike Luisi, as they kept the scoring chances to a minimum. Kota Otsuka earned the victory in goal for the Cougars.

David Rivera opened the Stanwich baseball season in fine fashion as he pitched the first no-hitter in Stanwich School history during a solid 5-0 win over Greenwich Country Day. Rivera was dazzling for the whole game as he fanned 15 batters and did not allow a base runner until the last inning. Rivera had great command and did not allow a walk during the game. The Cougars look to continue their winning ways on April 22 when they take on Central Middle School.

The Stanwich School squash team captured the National Championship in the Boys B Division at Yale University with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Hackley School. The Cougars breezed through the opening two rounds of play by beating Friends School of Baltimore, 5-0 and Poly Prep, 4-1. On Saturday, the real excitement started as Stanwich took on Boys Latin of Maryland in the semi-finals. In the opening match, Sam Konolige dropped a tough one, but Scott Brown bounced right back to even the match at one. Grant Khosla played an epic 5-set match, but could not pull out a victory. Once again, Stanwich fought right back with a convining three set to none victory by John Rohrbach to even up the match at two. The weight of the world was now on the shoulders on Zach Bai. With a win, Stanwich goes on to the finals. With a loss, the Cougars play for third place. Bai fell behind early 2 sets to zero. However, Zach did not give up and battled back to win 3-2 in dramatic fashion. With the victory, the Cougars were set to meet Hackley in the finals. In the finals, the Cougars earned two quick victories by Grayson Bubrosky and Scott Brown. Hackley did not back down and won the next two matches to even the match. Once again, the fate of Cougars came down to one match. This time, John Rohrbach came up big and won his match easily to secure the National title for Stanwich. Coach Merilyn Stephens was so proud of the boys and loved the way they stuck together and played their hearts out.

The Boys' Basketball team of Mr. Murphy improved to 3-0 win a 56-33 win over Greenwich Country Day. The Cougars came out flying in the first quarter and built up a convincing 23-9 lead. Leading the way was Will Gittings, who scored 10 points in the opening quarter. Greenwich Country Day bounced back in the second quarter to cut the lead to five at halftime. However, an offensive display by Ryan Flippin in the third quarter stopped GCDS's chance of a comeback. During the quarter, Flippin scored 13 points, including a 3-pointer. When all was said and done, Stanwich came out with another impressive win. Also helping out in the victory was Logan Bohbot (8 points), Eddie Meizels (5 points), Christa Dawson (4 points), David Rivera (4 points) and Tim Agro (2 points).

The Stanwich School hockey team battled hard, but came up a little short to Greenwich Country Day by a score of 5-2. Greenwich Country Day came out strong and scored the first two goals of the game. However, Stanwich did not lose their spirit and scored midway through second period to cut the lead to one. The goal was scored by Evan Tesei on a nice pass from Sydney Cole. The Cougars continued to work hard and tied the game on a breakaway on Evan Tesei with six minutes to go in the game. Stanwich could not find the back the net for the rest of the game, and GCDS was able to pull away in the final minutes to come away with a hard-fought 5-2 victory.

The Stanwich School hockey earned their first victory of the season in thrilling fashion with a win over Harvey 8-7. Stanwich opened up the scoring in the first ten seconds of the game on a beautiful passing play by Charlie Russell (Goal) and Evan Tesei (Assist). Harvey added the equalizer in the final minutes of the first period. Stanwich fell behind early in the second period. However, the Cougars bounced back with three consecutive goals (Sydney Cole, Charlie Russell and Philip Brauer). It looked good for Stanwich at the end of the second period as they led 4-2. However, Harvey fought back with three goals of their own to take the lead 5-4. The Cougars did not panic and remained patient. As a result, they were able to tie the game on a goal by Evan Tesei and then took the lead when Charlie Russell recorded his hat trick with his third goal of the game. Harvey would not quit, and they scored to tie the game again. Stanwich answered right back with two goals (Tesei and Kota Otsuka) to claim the victory.

The Stanwich School girls' basketball team of Ms. St. Laurent battled hard against Eastern Middle School, but lost a tough one. Despite being down by 14 points at half time, the Cougars rallied back and got within 6 points in the first four minutes of the 3rd quarter. Stanwich played great team defense and exhibited a lot of heart. When the final horn sounded, Stanwich was on the short side of a 36-24 score. Coach St. Laurent was quick to point out that the score was not a true reflection of how close the game really was.

The Stanwich School hockey team played inspired hockey, but lost a close game to King 8-5. The Cougars played hard throughout the game and never gave up. King came out and scored three quick goals, but the Cougars kep their composure and scored in the closing minutes of the first period. The first goal of the season was a Russell combination, as Will Russell scored on a shot in front of the goal on a beautiful pass from Charlie Russell. At the start of the second period, King scored again. However, the Cougars bounced back on a beaufifully placed shot by Evan Tesei. Once again, Charlie Russell made the pass to set up the goal. After another goal by King, Jeffrey Meeker lit the lamp on a nice set up by Sydney Cole. King added another tally, but once again Stanwich showed their heart and scored the next two goals on nice individual efforts by Charlie Rusell and Kota Otsuka. Stanwich battled hard to the very end, but the could not tie the score. At the end of the game, the coaching staff was thrilled with the total team effort. Philip Brauer and Thomas Chisholm played inspired defense and were all over the ice breaking up plays. Dongju Lee played hard and kept driving forward the whole game. Leading the way in goal was Mike Luisi. Being his first time in goal during a game, he made several outstanding stops and kept the Cougars in the game the whole time.

The Stanwich School coached by Mr. Dunn, started off their 2010 campaign on the right foot. Although falling to Western Middle School 16-12, the girls played extremely well. Despite Western jumping out to a quick start scoring the first three buckets of the game, the Cougars never lost their composure. First on the board for Stanwich was Katherine Medina, assisted by Immy Hepsworth. The Cougars, led by captain Chelsea Foster remained highly competitive the rest of the way. With their tenacious defense, anchored by Caroline Burch, Claire Foran, Alex Ng, Ali Baird, Emma Wagner and Clare Hanlon helped keep Western in for the majority of the game. On the offensive side, Chelsea Foster led the way with 6 points, Immy Hepsworth scored 3 points, Katherine Medina had 2 points and Claire Foran netted on point.

The Stanwich School basketball team of Mr. Murphy started their season in convincing fashion against Brunswick. The Cougars jumped out early and never looked back. Leading the way offensively were Ryan Flipping (19 points) and Will Gittings (10 points), who combined for 29 first half points. Throughout the game, Stanwich played unselfish basketball by continually hitting the open man. This led to many easy baskets. Making a strong impression in their first Stanwich basketball game were Logan Bohbot and Eddie Meizels. Bohbot came alive in the second half and scored 7 points. Christa Dawson also made an impression in the second half by chipping in with 8 points as well. The Cougars look to continue their winning ways next week against New Canaan Country School.

On January 6, the Stanwich Cougars girls' Basetball team of Mr. Dunn took a tough defeat by the hands of the Windward School, 24-2. Caroline Burch scored the lone bucket for the Cougars. With a full week of practice before their next game, the Cougars look to rebound from this loss, as they prepare to take on Greenwich Academy on January 19.

The Stanwich School girls' basketball team of Mr. Rogers dropped their opener to a very talented St. Aloysius team. St. Aloysius came out strong and jumped out to an early lead.  The Cougars worked hard and remained positive. In the second half, the Cougars made some adjustments and score a couple of baskets by Claudia Consuegra and Cori Gabaldon.  However, the deficit was too much overcome, and St. Aloysius came out with the victory.

The Stanwich School cross country team continues to improve every week. Last Thursday, Jenny Goggin continued her winning ways and took first place in the 7th Grade Girls' Division and 7th place overall with a time of 13:25. Reed McMurchy, Acacia Dougan and Garsy Presumey-Leblanc had great races finishing 51st, 55th and 59th, respectively. Coach Cali has been particularly impressed with the work of Uma Ramesh, as she has decreased her time by over ten minutes and moved up twenty-one places in the standings.

The Stanwich School football team came back from a tough defeat against Brunswick to post an 8-6 victory against the Riverside Gators. The game did not start off on the right track for the Cougars, as they turned the ball over on their first two possessions of the game. The second turnover proved costly as the Gators converted the opportunity into a touchdown to go up 6-0. However, the Cougars did not give up and quickly moved the ball down the field on the Gators. The offense was led by the running of Pete Agro. Grayson Bubrosky also chipped in with a couple of receptions from Eddie Meizels. The offense got inside the five yard line of the Gators, but they could not put one in the endzone and had to give the ball over on downs. The defense quickly responded with a beautiful strip of the football by John Rohrbach. This time the Cougars capitalized on a run by Eddie Meizels to tie the game at six. Stanwich took the lead on the two-points conversion on a beautifully designed play action pass from Meizels to Rohrback. The Cougars defense played strong the second half of the game and did not allow the Gators into the end zone. One of the defensive highlights came on an interception by Max Cohen. The Cougars look to continue their winning ways when they travel to New Canaan Country School on October 15.

The Stanwich School girls' soccer team of Ms. Galiani got off to a good start with an impressive 4-1 victory over Harvey. The Cougars quickly fell behind 1-0 in the opening minutes. However, the girls regrouped and scored the equalizer a few minutes later on a nice goal by Allie Cooper. Stanwich continued their pressure and scored the go ahead goal on a nice individual effort by Mari Riera. The Cougars never let up and scored two more goals on the day by Clare Hanlon and Emily Wack. Leading the way on the defensive side of the ball were Natalie Puente, Katherine Medina and Bella Libassi. Martha Belshaw played a strong game in goal and made several game changing saves.

The Stanwich School cross country team traveled to Bruce Park for their first Fairchester Athletic Association meet of the season.  Leading the way for the Cougars was Jenny Goggin who finished 10th overall out of 105 runners.  Jenny was the second girl runner to complete the course. The runners will head to Hackley on October 1 to compete in another FAA meet.
