


Stanwich JV Baseball Opens Season with Win Over BrunswickDate Posted: 4/18/12
Opening day for the Stanwich JV baseball team proved to be a memorable one for the boys of spring as the team defeated Brunswick 9-3. David Rivera dominated the game on the mound by pitching six, strong innings. In the six innings, managed to pick up 12 strikeouts and only allowed 6 hits and two earned runs. Connor Langan came in to shut the door in the final inning. Rivera was also led the way offensively for the Cougars collecting three hits in four at bats. Gregg Febraio (2 hits, 2 runs scored), Pete Agro (2 hits, 1 run scored, 2 RBI) and John Esposito (2 hits) had big days at the plate for the Cougars. The boys played a great defensive game and were very excited to start the season off with a win.
In their final game of the season, the Stanwich football team again showed heart and resiliency in a comeback that fell just short by losing 14-12 to Fairfield Country Day. Quarterback Connor Langan, who had scored earlier in the game on a long run, led a final drive which brought the trailing Cougars within 2 points on a rainbow pass to Elijah Tateishi. While the 2-point conversion fell short, the Stanwich players closed the gap against Fairfield Country Day bringng them within inches of another tieing the game.
In other highlights from the game, Ian Peeler made a second half interception off a tipped pass by Matt Smith which ended FCDS's momentum in the second half. Lukens Boolbol also knocked down a pass earlier in the drive, and Chance Noonan nearly picked off a deep pass playing free safety. Hard running by John Esposito kept drives alive for the Cougars who walked off the field with their heads held high and as a much improved team from early in the season. The commitment of the team to each other, their coaches and to be noble and gracious competitors was evident through their close losses, big wins and major comebacks this season. The team expressed gratituge and a sense of great accomplishment after the game.
